Contest: What's Your Maximum?

Tuesday, September 21st is the day that the debut album of Maximum Balloon drops and Space 15 Twenty is excited to be hosting its release party. Not quite a solo album and not quite a side-project, Maximum Balloon features TV on the Radio David Sitek, whose beat-making, songwriting and collaborative production skills all at once, authored with different singers he calls, "his favorite voices in the world."

To celebrate its eponymous release, Maximum Balloon is hosting a contest inviting the contestants to be inspired by the album and Sitek himself will be picking the winner, giving them $1000(!) and showcasing their work and the finalists at the album release party here at Space 15 Twenty on the 21st of September. For more information, check out the official Maximum Balloon site. There's only two days left as the deadline for entry is September 10, 2010 by midnight.

FYF 2010 RECAP KCRW. Laura’s always keeping up on her music so it was only fitting that she spent the day taking on L.A.’s Labor Day festival – FYF 2010.

***

The day began with a running start. Intent on catching FYFest openers Cults, I arrived with just enough time to enjoy their last couple of songs, which did not disappoint – Madeline’s dancing, long waving hair and short jumper pretty much set the scene for the rest of the day. Downtown LA was having its own dirt field festival and the kids were excited.

Madeline Follin of Cults

Less of a party atmosphere, more like a village, long lines for entry and longer lines for water, I caught Origami Vinyl selling their wares, local music journal L.A. Record holding court, lots of spangle chic clothes for sale and daylong tattoos from LA Weekly. Oh yeah! NY’s own Babycakes NYC (now serving Los Angeles!) fed me some of their delicious vegan treats too.

Babycakes!

With a full day’s work of bands to choose from, bits were enjoyed by the mellifluous Vetiver, new pop heroine Best Coast with meetings scheduled later for Ariel Pink, !!!  and Panda Bear, all while the great Dublab Soundsystem filled the interstitial voids with cool tunes.

Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast

To say the least, LA sun, we loved you. Thanks for helping end our summer the best way we could – by making a day at the Fuck Yeah Fest really, really hot.

Waiting for it... free water lines

Three Quarterlies This Quarter

Without the pressure of a monthly deadline, art & culture quarterlies have freedom to produce something inspired. The best are like art objects disguised as magazines. This quarter I am reading Apartamento, Whitewall and Cabinet.

APARTAMENTO

Apartamento is a challenge to classify: it's the Un-Interior Design, Interior Design journal exploring the way people appropriate spaces. Sterile living rooms and manicured gardens are avoided. Apartamento's spaces are admired for their innovation in "hominess," with interviews and contributions from international creatives. "Gardening" is a casual snapshot of an unusual plant with instructions for care. Photo essays are travel logs of hotel rooms. Poems and short stories are on spaces loved and places missed. All this is with an emphasis on ways inhabitants and design coexist. Somehow the small journal feels intensely personal like we've been invited past the doorstep and straight up to the bedroom.

WHITEWALL

If the white cube is the gallery than Whitewall is the magazine as the gallery. The sleek and stylish journal is a highly curated selection of reviews, profiles, new artists, artists to watch and an in-depth focus topic. Fashion and design as art are incorporated too. Whitewall is cutting edge (the current issue features an interview with the music and fashion exec Damon Dash on his new Tribeca gallery). Still, it's not afraid to be cutthroat (Jeff Koons' curatorial project "Skin Fruit" is ripped to shreds). This quarter performance art and artists are explored. This said, the $20 magazine contains $10 worth of ads. Be suspicious of the "too-cool" glossy format.

CABINET

Cabinet consistently informs and inspires. Like a cabinet of curiosities, each issue explores peculiarities on a chosen topic. This quarter Cabinet takes on the idea of islands like Pulau Pejantan in the Indonesian archipelago. Zhao Renhui's photographs share some of Pulau Pejantan's wonders- a black geyser, white sand dunes, rare species of animals and fauna that aren't seen anywhere else in the world. The island's perpetual thick fog makes Renhui's photos of the exotic ghost hare, pejantan paradise birds and iromondi cat look dreamlike. Per usual, art, culture, science and history are an integral part of Cabinet's story telling.

Reading is Fun: Please Take Me Off the Guest List by Nick Zinner, Zachary Lipez, and Stacy Wakefield Please Take Me Off the Guest List is the latest collaboration by NYC-based artists and friends Zachary Lipez, Nick Zinner, and Stacy Wakefield.  Like with the trio's previous releases -- No Seats On The Party Car, Slept in Beds, and I Hope You Are All Happy Now -- Zinner lends his photographic eye, Lipez contributes text, and Wakefield designs the book.

Shooting on tour with his band the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Zinner captures the seemingly endless stream of images during these peripatetic periods, including hedonistic late nights as well as ebullient, sun-dappled landscapes.  The book's clever layout presents these photographs as a continuous narrative, while interspersed throughout are Lipez’s comically self-deprecating essays, chronicling everything from cocaine-induced ramblings to dreary shifts as a bookstore clerk.

Please Take Me Off the Guest List will be officially released on October 1, but Akashic Books is offering a special limited edition pre-order for a signed copy of the book, a 7" with original songs performed by the authors, and a one-of-a-kind photograph signed and numbered Zinner.  Get it here.

Advance copies will also be available at the The Music and the Making of I'm Here Pop-Up Shop, opening this Thursday in the Gallery Space.
